EDGE Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution

Overview:

EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) is part of the defined and standardized evolution of GSM/GPRS. Since the first commercial launch of EDGE in June 2003, more than 110 operators have adopted the EDGE standard. EDGE provides wireless operators with improvements in data throughput that averages more than three times that of GPRS, and with improvement in data capacity of up to 6 times.

Overview:
The Nortel GSM S8000 BTS Indoor and Outdoor versions are designed to meet the economic and performance requirements of network operators. Based on a highly integrated RF and digital design, these platforms are compact, modular, and high-performance. The GSM BTS S8000 is also used in Nortel GSM-R solution.


GSM Base Transceiver Station (BTS) S8002 - Indoor & Outdoor


Overview:
The Nortel GSM BTS S8002 - Outdoor is a high performance 2 DRX BTS designed for macro cellular voice and data applications for railways, with site configurations ranging from 1 TRX to 2 TRXs either in bisectorial or omni directional site configurations. This BTS is based on Nortel's GSM BTS S8000 Outdoor and uses the same modules and software. The Nortel GSM BTS S8002 is a compact product ideal for remote rural deployments. Batteries can be included, a site support cabinet is not needed.

Overview:
The Nortel GSM BTS S8003 - Indoor is a high performance 3 DRX BTS designed for macro cellular voice and data applications, with site configurations ranging from 1 TRX to 3 TRXs either in trisectorial, bisectorial or omni directional site configurations. This BTS is based on Nortel's GSM BTS S8000 Indoor and uses the same modules and software. The Nortel GSM BTS S8003 is a compact product ideal for remote rural deployments.


GSM Transcoding Unit (TCU)


Overview:

The Nortel GSM Transceiver Coding Unit (TCU) encodes and decodes speech, as well as handling data rate adaptation. Because the air interface requires that all speech be digitized at certain rates, the transmission rate is 13 kbits/s. Since the accepted rate is usually 64 kbits/s within the network, the signal must be translated. This translation is performed by the TCU. Designed to satisfy the continuous increase in the number of GSM subscribers and in the MoU (minutes of usage) per subscriber, Nortel TCU (TCU 3000) is a very high and scalable capacity product ranging from 200 E to 1800 E in one transcoding node, or up to 3600 E with two transcoding nodes in one TCU 3000 cabinet.
